Having ‘Clean’ teeth is an important aspect for the success of any dental treatment and particular those where teeth need to be reshaped, need filling due to decay or being worn down or treatment involving the replacement of missing teeth or gaps.

Bacteria are one of the main causes for dental treatment failing. Bacteria cause the breakdown of the bond between restorations and the tooth structure resulting in the filling cracking, coming loose or decaying developing under the filling potentially resulting in pain and infection. It also effects tooth replacement through bone resorption or breaking down the cement that attaches bridges to teeth. From an aesthetic point of view, bacteria can cause the discolouration also.

An important aspect also to be aware of is the development of gum inflammation due to bacteria collecting near the gum margin. As the gums become more and more exposed to bacteria they become red and inflamed causing bleeding or bone resorption potentially making teeth loose or less able to function.

Utilising a tooth brush twice a day and brushes in between teeth ensure that your restoration does not develop any of the above problems that can result in them failing prematurely.
